Student Council elections reach final stage, no major violence reported

The Panjab University Student Council elections were reached in its last stage around 2pm. The polling at about 148 polling booths in the Panjab University (PU) and other booths in different colleges affiliated to PU had been started at 8am on Monday.

CHANDIGARH: The Panjab University Student Council elections reached the last stage around 2pm. The polling at about 148 polling booths in the Panjab University (PU) and other booths in different colleges affiliated to PU had started at 8am on Monday.
Meanwhile, no major violence was reported throughout the university and colleges. A youth made a call at police control room claiming firing took place at DAV College, Sector 10, and later retracted claiming that firing took place in Sector 19.

Police officials claimed preliminary probe revealed that it was a hoax call. Ruckus and chaos was witnessed outside Sri Guru Gobind Singh College (SGGSC), Sector 16, SD College, Sector 32 etc when overenthusiastic students, including females, started rallies climbing on luxury vehicles including SUVs along with dhols.
The main contestants over the posts of presidentship of Student Council is among four alliances. The alliances were including of SOI, ABVP, INSO and HPSO. The second alliance is PUSU-NSUI-SF, NSO and HSA. The third alliance is NSUI, SOPU, PUHH, HIMSU.
About 1,500 police personnel including 8 DSPs, 24 Inspectors and three IPS officers were deputed for maintaining law and order situation during the student elections.
